From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Pilot fiore while on a cross country training flight deviated from his assigned flight plan. The flight plan filed, required him to fly from bullhead city to kingman AZ enroute to prescott at 9500 feet. Fiore flew instead on a direct route to prescott and entered a canyon in the vicinity of mohon peak. He attempted to exit the canyon but rising terrain prevented his exit. He attempted to make a left turn in the canyon striking the canyon wall at approximately 6500 feet altitude. He admitted in a interview that the aircraft appeared to be operating properly but it lacked the performance needed to exit the canyon.
