What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
(-23) The pilot entered the traffic pattern at the airport and was conducting pre-landing checks when he was distracted by a radio call of another aircraft in the pattern. After locating the other aircraft the pilot was in a position to turn base and forgot to complete the pre-landing check. The landing gear was still in the "up" position. While turning base to final the pilot was again distracted by an aircraft taking the active runway for take-off. He had to conduct "s" turns on final to slow down for the other aircraft to take-off. After the other aircraft cleared the runway the pilot completed his landing not knowing that he had never lowered the landing gear. This experimental aircraft was not equipped with a gear warning system. After skidding to a stop the pilot exited the aircraft. Damage was limited to the composite prop and the flap trailing edges.
