From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) The owner, john holden recently purchased aircraft N4634J, a Piper PA-28R180. On 07-13-2004 Mr. Holden was receiving dual flight instruction from a CFI, Mr. Aaron cowger. Mr. Holden and with Mr. Cowger (CFI) departed kpnc at 11:30 CDT, and after some maneuvers, the CFI asked Mr. Holden to make a landing at 403. After a missed approach at 403, and go around, Mr. Holden performed a second approach on runway 17, after touchdown the brakes were applied, and the aircraft began to veer to the left of the runway, and the right rudder was applied. At this time, Mr. Holden stated that the aircraft continued to veer left. When the left main gear dropped off of the runway into the grass and it appeared that the aircraft would contact a taxiway sign, the CFI instructed Mr. Holden to push full throttle and takeoff in an attempt to miss the sign. Full throttle was applied and as the aircraft lifted off of the ground, the left main gear struck the taxiway sign. At this time, the CFI took full control of the aircraft, and climbed to 2000 feet. The left gear light was not on, the right landing gear and nose gear were on. The CFI elected to do a gear down emergency landing. Mr. Holden stated that on final approach, the CFI instructed him to kill the engine. The runway approach was made, the aircraft landed on the right main and the nose gear. As the airspeed bled off the left wing dropped onto the runway surface. The aircraft skidded and then veered off of the runway onto the grass. After the aircraft skidded through a small ravine, the nose gear collapsed and the aircraft came to a stop.
