What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
(-23) On September 11, 20O4, about 16:40 Alaska daylight time, an experimental bailey Merlin gt airplane, N354B, sustained substantial damage when it collided with terrain during an aborted landing at the Kenai airport, Kenai, Alaska. The aircraft was piloted by the owner marvin bailey, and was being operated under 14 CFR part 91, VFR, on a personal local flight. The private pilot and lone passenger were not injured. During a telephone conversation with the pilot and the FAA investigator in charge it was determined that the pilot realized he had made several errors. His first admitted error was accepting a landing clearance with a quartering tailwind. His second admitted error was not initiating a go around immediately. The pilot reported that the aircraft bounced on his initial landing and he tried to salvage the landing, the aircraft bounced again at which time a gust yawed the aircraft to a direct downwind heading. When the pilot did apply full power to go around the aircraft sank to the ground collapsing the landing gear and damaging the left wing.
