From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Aircraft departed ilm and during climb encountered severe vibration. PIC elected to shut engine down due to concerns of the engine breaking from it's mounts. PIC made a safe off airport landing causing no further damage to aircraft and no injuries. PIC indicated that the belly was covered in oil and that the engine crankcase was fractured between the #1 and #2 cylinders. On 10/13/2004 I went to ilm and inspected the aircraft/engine area with the cowling removed. I observed the crankcase to be cracked between #1 and #2 cylinders and a connecting rod nut to be fused to the case at the location of the crack. The engine would not rotate more than 90 degrees in any direction. The oil screen and filter were inspected and found to be clean. There was no measurable oil in the sump. There was a loose oil fitting (5 flats from snug) found on the oil in fitting on the accy. Housing. No oil was noted fwd of the engine baffling. The engine is being returned to Lycoming for analytical diss.
