What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
(-23) On October 2, 2004, at approximately 1330 local time, the pilot in command of N499CA, a rockwell AC-12A, stated that during cruise flight a loud thump was heard in or about the left wing area. Immediately after hearing the noise, the left main landing gear light illuminated indicating the left main landing gear had deployed to the down position. The pilot in command lowered the landing gear; all three down and locked indications were present. The pilot in command elected to return to the departure airfield and execute a landing. The landing phase was uneventful. Approximately half way through the roll out phase, the left main landing gear collapsed. The aircraft came to rest in the grass to the left of the runway. The aircraft sustained minor damage. The post accident investigation revealed the left main landing gear side brace assembly failed in the up position allowing premature deployment of the landing gear and removed the side loading capability of the landing gear. The pilot and occupant sustained no injuries. A flight plan was filed. Weather and NOTAMS information was retrieved from the flight service station. The weather was VFR.
