What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
(-23) Pilot was on approach to Fairfield Municipal Airport (ffl) attempting to land ahead of a Cessna citation. For this reason he decided to land on runway 18 even though this was a downwind landing. According to fort dodge afss the wind at ffl was 290 degrees at 10 knots. Pilot stated that he made the decision to land on runway 18 too high and too close so that even with a descent rate of 1500 feet per minute he crossed the threshold too high and too fast and was unable to land. Pilot initiated a go-around due to excessive speed. During go-around the engine started to lose power. The pilot stated he pulled carb heat on and the engine momentarily caught then quit. He also stated the aircraft was too low to effect an engine restart so he landed in a field approximately one mile short of the airport. Pilot reported that the aircraft bounced twice, on the second bounce the aircraft landed on an up slope causing the nose landing gear to break off with visible damage to the engine cowling.
