From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) American airlines flight 489, aircraft N974TW, an MD-83, landed at mci from lga. The aircraft landed during a period of heavy snow and the outside temperature was 32 degrees, which made for a slippery surface. At the time of the event airport personnel were in the process of issuing a change to the braking action report indicating that the ability to slow the aircraft had diminished. While attempting to turn off the runway at a speed of less than 5 knots the captain was not able to make the right turn to exit the runway nor was he able to stop the aircraft from sliding off the runway. The nose gear and left main gear left the runway at the intersection of runway 19L and runway turnoff E8. There were no injuries and the passengers were deplaned via the aft stairs. The aircraft was towed from the mud and taken to the gate where an inspection was completed on the aircraft. There was no significant damage to the aircraft but the nose spray deflector was replaced. Incident was referred to aala cmo for asap. Incident privacy data omitted is considered closed with the filing of this report.
