From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Aircraft departed chillocothe, Missouri (CHT), enroute to st. louis, Missouri (1H0), via brookfield, Missouri (MO8). Pilot states that after departing MO8 around 09:00 CST, and climbing through 4200 feet, he heard the engine make a loud noise, followed by a loss of power and "a lot of engine banging noise and heavy vibration." An emergency landing was attempted at Macon-fowler memorial airport (K89), Macon, Missouri. On approach to runway 02, pilot stated that he noticed he was too high and traveling at about 115 mph. At this time he tried to "force the plane to the runway and get on the brakes." Noticing that he was "way down the runway" he applied full throttle in an attempt to clear the trees at the end of the runway and land in a clearing he had seen earlier. After clearing the trees, the "airspeed started falling off rapidly", and the aircraft impacted several trees, finally coming to rest atop a house. Subsequent engine inspection revealed severe damage to the #4 cylinder/piston, caused by a broken exhaust valve.
