From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On July 12, 2005, an Emb-145, chautauqua flight 3220, was cruising at 16,000 feet; on the start of descent the first officer noticed a smell or heat in the cockpit. It was barely noticeable, but there. Then at 11,000 feet the smell was gone. Flight was continued with normal descent and approach into the Syracuse Hancock International Airport, Syracuse, NY (syr). At approximately 400 ag, N1 itt was spiked to 1096 celsius simultaneously with a compressor stall-type of noise and yaw. Engine spooled down immediately. I assumed severe damage to the #1 engine. Made a normal landing. Crash, fire, and rescue inspected the aircraft. No fire/smoke. Taxied to terminal. Contract maintenance, exec air, inspected the front and rear sections of the #1 engine, and discovered chunks of metal between the #1 compressor section between the 6-8 o'clock position. The operator was in the process of sending out company maintenance to remove and replace the #1 engine. This incident is considered closed.
