From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Private pilot privacy data omitted was receiving flight instruction from privacy data omitted toward an instrument rating through a 141 flight school, American winds (ayks). The flight (N7768G) departed the akron-fulton international airport and proceeded toward that akron VOR to practice navigation. The radar data indicates that N7768G remained in the vicinity of the akron VOR at altitudes between 3300'MSL and 1500'MSL and appeared to have conducted a few 360 degree turns as well as an s-turn. N7768G appears to have been heading approximately west-northwest (305 degree heading) when it was involved in a mid-air collision with a Lancair (N235U) that was heading north toward portage county airport. The mid-air occurred at approximately 2:05PM local time about 1 mile south of the akron VOR, the altitude of the aircraft was between 2300 and 2500 feet MSL, neither aircraft was in contact with air traffic control at the time.
