From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Aircraft is an experimental being flown in that category and pilot/builder was in the process of flying off its phase 1 40 hour flight requirements. Pilot departed NJ02 (alloway airport) at approximately 14:30L and established a southwest heading to the Delaware bay. Operations were normal during this phase of flight, a 180 degree turn was accomplished for the leg back to the NJ02, approximately one-third of the way back the engine failed with oil leaking and blue smoke. Pilot initiated an off airport landing in soybean field. The aircraft touched down normally and decelerated rapidly due to a buildup of the crop in front of the conventional landing gear. This agriculturual buildup caused the aircraft to slowly turn over at the end of the landing roll with damage to the propeller, cowling, vertical stabilizer, rudder, wing lift struts and fabric wing cover. Pilot was flying on an expired medical.

As the FAA filed it
