From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) N637AW was taxiing to runway 27L in phl for takeoff on flight 430 on Sunday 09/24/06 when the tower reported smoke coming from the landing gear. The aircraft returned to the gate where the technicians found the following damage: #2 MLG wheel assy inner bearing failed and wheel axle hub badly damaged with several large pieces missing and deep scoring of the wheel assy; #2 brake assy heat sheilds damaged & distorted with some deformation on the brake pressure plate, #2 brake cooling fan fins damaged. The flight was cancelled; the aircraft left phl on Monday 09/25/06 on a reposition flight. All the damaged parts (#2 brake, #1 & 2 MLG wheel assemblies) were replaced to return the aircraft to an airworthy condition except for the #2 brake cooling fan which was deferred on MEL. These discrepancies are documented on logpages #7421062 to 065. The bearing that failed is manufacturer's (timken) part number of 48290. There is a previous SDR (AWXA20050023) on this bearing part number filed on 2/14/2005 for aircraft N654AW. Phl FSDO17 incident log #2006-I-041. Photos of the damaged components are available at the phl FSDO.
