From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Departing bloomington airport, (bmg), bloomington, IN., without incident, to Smith field, (smd) Fort Wayne, IN., the pilot extended the landing gear for landing. Pilot found MLG to indicate down, locked and safe. Upon landing on runway 5 at smd, the aircraft veered to the left upon nose gear contact. The aircraft traversed into the grass off the runway. The nose gear collapsed, and the propeller contacted the soil. The pilot stated he tried to steer back onto runway 5 where the aircraft came to a stop. privacy data omitted, Director of maintenance for mercury air center, found upon lifting the aircraft for movement that the nose landing gear lock actuator mount broken. This allowed the NLG to not positively lock in the down position, allowing the NLG to roll back and fold. Note: date of incident amended from 11/17/2006 to actual date of 11/18/2006.
