From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) During a repositioning flight from bdr to pottstown, pa (kptw) at 1000 feet MSL aircraft experienced engine failure. Pilot established an autorotation and landed without incident in a residential backyard. Inspection of the curtis wright 989C9HE2 radial engine revealed that magneto plenolic gear assembly was stripped causing the shaft not to rotate. The bendix magneto, bendix part #D9LN-2, serial #06442M, was overhauled and yellow tagged on 12/05/2005 by s&t aircraft accessories, inc., FAA repair station #CC2R737K, work order 44074 (10-94500-2W). This magneto failed at 53.4 hours time since overhaul. On 09/22/2006 this magneto was installed on N58HU engine as documented on the aircraft log book page 584514 after an inflight engine failure, that occurred on 09/21/2006. This magneto failed at 87.8 hours time since overhaul. On 04/02/07 the magneto was removed from the aircraft's engine, FAA form 8020-2 titled "aircraft/part identification and release" was attached to the magneto and a FAA form 1600-70 titled "chain of custody repair" was issued to aircraft operator. The magneto will be further studied for cause of failure.
