What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
(-23) Aircraft departed williamsport, pa (ipt) in an attempt to set a long distance glider record. The pilot reported during cruise flight, which was at ridge-top level in very mountainous terrain, that he encountered severe winds which included rotating winds in excess of 50 knots. The effect of the rotating and sheer winds along with the proximity to a ridge-top caused the loss of flight control effectiveness which resulted in the aircraft crashing approximately 100' below a ridge-top. The aircraft wreckage was located in a very remote area accessible only by foot. The aircraft was destroyed and the pilot suffered severe injuries to his legs and arms.
