From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Pilot departed runway 25 for ship creek departure. At about 400 feet AGL aircraft lost power, and pilot pushed engine controls full forward, checked fuel selector and radioed Merrill tower his intention to land. Tower cleared for any runway. Pilot initiated left 180 degree turn but didn't complete turn to runway 7 and landed hard between taxiway "charlie" and runway 17 at or near runup area "mike." Upon touchdown engine resumed power and aircraft became airborne. Pilot elected to land on taxiway adjacent to runway 17. Witnesses stated that the right main landing gear splayed out upon the first touchdown and the right wing tip contacted the ground. Pilot continued to taxi to hangar after landing. Damage to aircraft limited to slight crease in right wingtip leading edge (non structural) and slightly bent right hand landing gear leg. Pilot stated that he inspected source of power loss and had accessory repair station disassemble and inspect carburetor. Accessory shop determined sticky carburetor float hinge due to uneven wear.
