From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) The pilot operated his single-place, amateur built, experimental category gyroplane on a FAR part 91 flight. The local flight was conducted out of kdwu at approx. 1815 local time. The pilot remained in the traffic pattern performing touch and gos. A weather briefing was not obtained and the observed conditions were clear with a slight crosswind to runway 18. On his last landing attempt, he failed to properly correct for a crosswind, drifting to the extreme right side of runway 28 (100' wide) at approximately midfield. The aircraft touched down on the left main wheel then alternately "rocked" from side to side on the main gear wheels until the left main gear assembly folded and the left wheel axle broke, liberating the left wheel/tire assembly. The gyroplane then tilted over on the left side and skidded a short distance causing the rotor blades, and propeller to strike the runway. The gyroplane sustained minor damage to the left main landing gear, rotor, propeller, fairing and deformation to the bottom of the rudder and left elevator tip. The pilot sustained minor injury to his left hand fifth finger and serious injury to his right wrist requiring surgery to implant a metal plate for broken/dislocated bone(s).

As the FAA filed it
