From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Flight 1, a B-747-400 operating from Narita, japan to hong kong had a minor fire in the overhead during passenger boarding. After being placed in the overhead bin, a passenger's carry-on baggage caught fire above seats 35B and c. flight attendants on board the aircraft used two fire extinguishers to put out the fire. At the time the fire began, approximately two-thirds of the passengers were onboard the aircraft. One passenger received a minor injury (burn) when he tried to extinguish the fire by hand. The passenger declined medical attention. Early indications revealed that a battery inside a flashlight had caught fire. The passenger whose luggage caught fire, and his bags, were removed from the aircraft and re-screened. The re-screening did not reveal anything abnormal. The burned flashlight and bag were secured by northwest airlines personnel and are being held for the NTSB, if desired. The jcab and NTSB were notified immediately after the fire and allowed the flight to depart for hong kong. The NTSB is working with the dot to determine if they will investigate the event due to recent industry events involving batteries.
