From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On jun 8, 2008, approximately 1730 local, the pilot of an experimental aircraft (N199L) experienced a catastrophic engine failure approximately 10 mile south of Bend, OR mean sea level (MSL). The PIC was en-route from marysville, CA (myv) to redmond, OR (rdm). The PIC said he noticed a loss in oil pressure causing the propeller to overspeed the engine to 3560 revolutions per minute (rmp's). The over-speeding was followed by a loud noise, heavy vibration and smoke from the cowling and cockpit. The PIC immediately reduced power, pulled the mixture to idle cut-off and turn the fuel selector to off. After landing short of runway 34 at Bend airport (S07) the main gear was sheared off by a birm causing the aircraft to skid on the main gear struts and tail causing substantial damage to the rudder. If the birm had not been there it is possible the airplane would have landed safely.

As the FAA filed it
