From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

8/05/2010 Aircraft was on a local training flight and had climbed out to an altitude of 2000MSL and proceeded to approximately 8 miles south of Thun field, Puyallup, WA. Aircraft was performing multiple 8'S on pylons and s-turns over the road. The aircraft then returned to Thun field and made a full stop. The aircraft then taxied back to runway 16 and initiated his take-off roll, aircraft rotated and at approximate altitude of 50 feet, the pilot noticed that the display to the GPS went blank followed by smoke coming from the GPS location. This was followed by heavy black smoke billowing from the defrost vents above the instrument panel. The pilot stated that he then turned off the master switch and began a right turn at approximately 45 degrees from the runway heading in order to make a left turn back to runway 34. The aircraft landed and both pilots exited the aircraft while on the runway. Personnel at the airport responded with fire extinguishers and put out the fire.
