From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On 09/062011 privacy data omitted, pilot of N637PG, a Lancair lecgacy, landed at ryan airport in Tucson Arizona. Upon nosewheel touchdown privacy data omitted stated that the aircraft started a severe nosewheel shimmy. Then the nosewheel collapsed causing the aircraft to exit the runway. As the aircraft exited the runway it destroyed a runway light. Damage to the aircraft was contained to the nose gear assembly, engine, propellor and engine mounts. This inspector inspected the damaged aircraft with the assistance of a maintanence inspector and has concluded that a mechanical failure of the shimmy damper, internal to the nose strut was the cause of the nose gear shimmy, collapse and subsiquint departure of the runway. This inspector advised the aircraft owner/builder to submit a sdr/mdr.
