From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On 9/08/2011 M315PA was on a training flight for trans pac aviation school. On board were a student pilot, a cfi/pic, and another CFI in the rear seat. After a 1 hour training flight the aircraft was on return descent to dvt. During descent the cfi/pic initiated a demonstration of low power (idle) rapid descent with the student pilot. During this manauver the power plant lost power. The cfi/pic was unable to restart the engine, declared an emergency, and landed in the desert north of dvt, Phoenix. Damage to the aircraft was minimal (broken strobe light on end of wing tip). Review of the aircraft and the maintenance records (including a engine run test) concludes that the airworthiness of the aircraft was not the cause of the loss of power.
