From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Aircraft was being flown to check all systems after several months in storage. Aircraft climbed to 2600 feet and was directed away from a pre-flight coordinated (with ATC) test area due to air traffic. During this deviation to the north/northeast a flapping noise was heard and vibration from the drive system. Smoke was detected in the nose cone and cockpit. ATC was contacted and due to location and wind direction the decision was made to land at Ormond Beach. This being a motorized glider the engine was shutdown and a landing was made at Ormond Beach. Aircraft taxied to ramp after restarting engine.
