From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Experimental amateur built aircraft on first flight following rebuild from July, 2009 incident. Aircraft engine quit after takeoff. Pilot attempted to return to field. Pilot has no recollection of accident due to severe injuries. Unable to verify engine and flight control continuitity or fuel available due to aircraft damage. Previous incident in 2009 also caused by engine stoppage. Engine manufacturer warning in operating, maintenance and install manuals states engine by design is subject to sudden stoppage and should not be operated unless a successful power off landing can be accomplished. Flight was from private grass strip in very steep terrain with very limited alternate landing sights available.
