From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Aircraft was purchased a week prior (approx 6-21-2012) to date of accident (6-28-2012) by mike mallory. Mr. Mallory hired privacy data omitted and privacy data omitted to fly aircraft to s. charleston, w.v.note: - - - aircraft was out of annual (last 10-2010). Aircraft was not registered to new owner (m. mallory). No ferry flight permit was obtained from FAA prior to flight. Aircraft was not insured. Approximately 8 miles south of akron-canton airport (cak), the l/h engine started to malfunction (sputtered and surged). The pilot shutdown the engine and feathered the propeller. The pilot noticed that aircraft could not maintain altitude on one engine and immediately started looking for a suitable landing area. Very soon after, the r/h engine started to experience the same conditions. Without the l/h engine, the hydraulic system for the landing gear is inoperable, so the pilot privacy data omitted asked the passenger privacy data omitted to pump down the landing gear. The pilot attempted to land in a field on top of a hill, but underestimated and landed short of intended target area. The aircraft entered a tree line and clipped some small branches. The l/h wing, l/h tire and nose tire made the initial contact with the ground, followed by the r/h tire and subsequent gear collapse. Aircraft came to rest in a farm field on the side of a hill of moderate grade.EMS was quickly on scene attending to serious injuries, and passengers were transported via life-flight to akron general hospital.NTSB investigation of the aircraft fuel system revealed severe corrosion and metallic contamination in the electric fuel pump, fuel strainer bowl, mechnical fuel pump, carburator inlet screen and carburator bowl. Observed weather @ 8:53AM: temp 70F, dew 57F, relative humid 64%, wind se at 7MPH, vis 10M and clear, alt 29.91
