privacy data omitted Departed the Porterville airport at approximately 1415 local time with a family friend on board the aircraft. The local automated weather was reporting scattered clouds at three thousand feet and a broken cloud layer at 9 thousand with great visibility. Mr. Armstrong departed to the north and flew over his business where he made a few circles for sight-seeing and then continued the flight over his home in springville where he made a few more circles. After completing the sight-seeing flight privacy data omitted flew the aircraft back to Porterville for landing. While entering the Porterville area privacy data omitted became aware of a Beechcraft A-36 which was flying at approximately the same altitude and the opposite direction. privacy data omitted Began his landing checklist and was then distracted by the A-36 causing him to stop the landing checklist and focus on the other aircraft. privacy data omitted Attempted to contact the other aircraft but could not understand the other pilots broken english and scratchy radio. privacy data omitted Continued into the traffic pattern for landing while continuing to search for the other aircraft without success. privacy data omitted Stated his altitude was a little high when turning onto the final approach segment and was not slowing down as much as he usually does. The aircraft floated above most of the runway while in the landing flare before touching down on the runway and sliding approximately 50 feet off the north end of the runway. On touchdown the aircraft was in the full flap configuration with the landing gear retracted. privacy data omitted Does not remember hearing the warning horn on landing but may not have heard the horn because of increased wind noise from the overhead air inlets and the warning horn sound is not wired to alert the pilot though the headsets. Both occupants of the aircraft were wearing a headset. The passenger of the aircraft is not a pilot and was on his first small airplane ride.
