From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

At about 1430 EDT on June 19, 2013, the sole occupant pilotprivacy data omitted of a Piper PA32-301T single engine airplane N4296T, taxied the airplane over 6000 feet from a local FBO to the approach end of Capital Region international airport (klan) runway 28L. The pilot stated he had felt the need for more power to maintain taxi speed and failed to recognize before taxiing that the parking brake was partially set. Once he was at the hold short line, he contacted ATCT and obtained permission to shut the engine down and exit to inspect the aircraft. Within minutes he noted a flame coming from the left main wheel fairing at the base of the left main tire. The pilot stated he extinguished the flames with his hand fire extinguisher, and then extinguished a flame forming on the right main wheel. Seeing growing smoke coming from beneath both wheel pants, he contacted ATCT for help. The pilot ran clear of the aircraft. A fire formed again causing substantial damage, engulfing both wheel pants and burning through the metal wings and flaps. The airport fire units arrived and extinguished the fire.
