From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Republic airlines (callsign brickyard) 4910 was operating as a domestic scheduled air carrier from newark liberty international airport (ewr) to Burlington international airport (btv) on July 22, 2013. Brickyard 4910 was operating on an instrument (IFR) flight plan and controlled by boston center as they entered the local terminal area for btv. The btv tower had closed a few minutes prior to brickyard 4910?s arrival. The weather was VFR with few clouds at 4700 feet, visibility of 10 miles and light and variable winds. The instrument landing system (ILS) for runway 33 was notamed out of service. Approximately 10 miles south of the airport and at 7000 feet, brickyard 4910 reported the airport in sight to boston center and was cleared for a visual approach to runway 33.

As the aircraft turned to the right to enter a base leg for runway 33, the crew lost visual contact with the airport due to an area of lower clouds between them and the airport. Brickyard 4910 maintained 4000 feet and turned to a downwind heading while contacting boston center to request an instrument approach to the airport. The minimum sector altitude (msa) on the ILS 33 chart for the quadrant is 5900 feet. The minimum vector altitude at this time was 3700 feet. While contacting boston center and on their heading, brickyard 4910 entered into a sector with a minimum vector altitude of 6200 feet.

Brickyard did not initiate a climb until directed to by boston center.

BRICKYARD 4910 WAS OPERATING ON AN INSTRUMENT (IFR) FLIGHT PLAN AND CONTROLLED BY BOSTON CENTER AS THEY ENTERED THE LOCAL TERMINAL AREA FOR BTV.
