From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Pilot took off from krhv (near san jose, CA) and upon passing salem, OR, at 4500 ft., he started smelling smoke, then saw smoke inside cockpit. Pilot tried turning off master but since it didn't help, pilot declared an emergency via radio to ATC and they provided vectors to mmv.

When aircraft was 2-3 miles from mmv, pilot stated the engine made a loud grinding and banging noise, then lost power. Pilot did not think he could make it to mmv so he elected to land in a nearby field.
