From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On 10/07/2016 the albany FSDO was contacted about an incident involving a Piper PA-17 vagabond aircraft. The aircraft had landed at Marcy Field (1I1)in Keene, NY. The operator intended to take off from Marcy Field and fly around the area. Upon hand propping the aircraft, the engine started and went to a higher than desired RPM. The aircraft began moving unoccupied and the operator attempted to stop the aircraft by holding onto the right wing strut. While holding the wing strut the aircraft began turning and the operator was unable to hold on. The aircraft taxied across the grass strip unoccupied and into a wooded area resulting in substantial damage. The wings were both bent rearward along the fuselage and the engine was stopped with the propeller contacting trees and brush.
