From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

The pilot landed at 5M3 for fuel. After filling all tanks to capacity, he departed runway 20. Shortly after takeoff, the cabin door popped open. The pilot elected to return to runway 20 to land and deal with the door. The pilot added 10 KTS airspeed to all his normal airspeed numbers. When rounding out in preparation for the landing flare, the aircraft dropped from a higher than anticipated height and contacted the runway very hard. The pilot needed to use full left rudder and brakes, and right differential power to keep the aircraft on the runway. At a low speed, the pilot was no longer able to keep the aircraft on the runway and it hit a snowbank on the right side of the runway. The right main landing gear failed and separated from its mount. The aircraft came to rest on the left main gear, nose gear, and the right wing which was setting on top of the snowbank.

As the FAA filed it
