From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Thursday, July 20, 2017, pilot was PIC of his 1943 North American AT-6D, and #2 of 4 aircraft participating in a formation flight around Dubuque, regional airport (dbq).

Pilot reported that on approach to landing, he observed the #1 aircraft extend his landing gear, and remarked to his passenger that he planned to extend his gear at the same location as the #1 aircraft. The pilot stated that his hand was on the gear lever and was waiting to fall into position, when the #1 plane increased his bank and turned "sharper." As the pilot was attempting to follow the #1 aircraft and maintain his position throughout the descent and round out to land he neglected to extend his landing gear. Additionally, the pilot stated that as he approached the touchdown point, he retarded the throttle, heard the gear warning horn and let the aircraft settle, followed by the sound of the prop striking the runway. The pilot stated that he did not attempt to apply power for a go-around.

THURSDAY, JULY 20, 2017, PILOT WAS PIC OF HIS 1943 NORTH AMERICAN AT-6D, AND #2 OF 4 AIRCRAFT PARTICIPATING IN A FORMATION FLIGHT AROUND DUBUQUE, REGIONAL AIRPORT (DBQ).
