From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

N9368Y, a 1960 Beech N35 bonanza, lost power while on final approach to runway 9R at the South Bend international airport in South Bend, Indiana. The pilot attempted an off airport landing outside the airport perimeter near the approach end of runway 9R. The aircraft struck a passing car, damaging the windshield and roof of the car. The airplane then made ground contact, skidding into a ditch, the left wing struck a light pole, and the airplane came to rest in the ditch alongside the road. The occupant of the car was uninjured. Neither the pilot nor his passenger was injured.

The aircraft sustained substantial damage. The left wing, underside of the aircraft, left main landing gear, and propeller were damaged. There was no post-accident fire.

Post-accident inspection indicated that the aircraft had fuel in both of its fuel tanks at the time of the accident. Further inspection of the fuel system, engine, and related components is planned by the NTSB. This report will be updated if additional, pertinent, information becomes available.
