From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On September 15, 2017, at 1312 EST, a starduster SA-100 experimental biplane, N1356W, privacy data omitted was enroute from chester airport (ksmc),chester, CT, to warwick airport (N72), warwick, NY, in visual meteorological conditions. Due to smoke, a precautionary off airport emergency landing was made in a marshy field, with high grass, which resulted in the aircraft cartwheeling. The pilot was not injured.

The pilot stated that the engine began to smoke an hour into the flight. Worried about the fabric covered, wooden framed aircraft catching fire, the decision to make a precautionary landing in a field was made.

The aircraft suffered damage to the fuselage, elevator, rudder, and both wings.

After inspection, the smoke was determined to be caused by a loose oil line leaking oil onto the exhaust manifold.
