What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
Aircraft departed fairbanks international airport (fai) on September 15, 2018 at 2040Z hours with two souls on board. Last contact by fai ATC was at 2104Z hours when radar showed the aircraft southbound on the NE edge of R-2211. No FAA flight plan was filed; family members said they were going on a hunting trip in the Alaska range for a few days.
On September 19, 2018 at 1620 adt the federal aviation administration (FAA) issued an alert notice (alnot)when family members reported the aircraft overdue. Local pilots initiated a widespread search on September 20; Alaska state troopers and the civil air patrol joined the search on September 22 when at approximately 1600 adt aircraft wreckage was spotted in chute creek near Healy, AK. The air national guard's 210th air rescue squadron reached the site at 4,300 MSL the following morning and confirmed aircraft identification, with no survivors.
The accident occurred at an unknown time between September 15 and September 22.
The aircraft had received extensive impact damage and post-accident fire. Wreckage signatures were consistent with a low speed turning impact. The right wing exhibited compression damage bending it aft, while the left wing showed tension signatures pulling it forward. Post accident investigation by the FAA, NTSB and Lycoming air safety investigator determined there were no signs of engine failure. The propeller had signatures consistent with an engine making power, the engine turned over, had compression in all four cylinders, and no significant obstructions were found in the oil pick-up strainer or carburetor inlet filter. The magnetos and carburetor were damaged by fire. The NTSB recovered a damaged portable GPS unit and sent it to their laboratory for possible analysis.
Toxicology report sent 11/06/2018 shows negative or not performed results for testing.
