From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

N123JB, BE36, 4I3-HGR, experienced engine failure and attempted to divert to Cambridge municipal airport (CDI), Cambridge, OH. Aircraft crashed in a field approx 2NM east of Cambridge, OH.

The PIC was in constant radio contact with ATC just prior to impact with terrain. ATC transcripts show the PIC noted there were abnormal engine indications and noises. The PIC attempted to divert first to barnesville airport and then to Cambridge municipal airport.

Witnesses to the aircraft accident stated they saw 'blue mist' coming from aircraft overhead while engine was 'back-firing and popping'. Witnesses stated engine subsequently stopped and aircraft impacted the terrain.

Records show aircraft was on a ferry flight from recent maintenance after a previous gear-up landing in February. Maintenance records indicate an engine teardown by the manufacturer, Continental, 145 air agency privacy data omitted, was accomplished and repaired per work order ES-9480 may 11, 2020. Additional repairs were also made to aircraft to enable it to be ferried to another location for final maintenance.

Confirmation of any mechanical irregularities cannot be made until an onsite engine teardown and investigation is completed by NTSB and FAA. Cause of accident is currently unknown.
