From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Around 9:15 am as the aircraft was climbing through 1300 ft, 7MILES southwest of F45 airport, there was the sound of a loud bang. The flight instructor stated he immediately took controls from his student. They saw oil spewing out of the engine cowling and smoke. The flight instructor said he ran through the emergency checklist and found the best place to land. They were over a residential neighborhood, so he maneuvered the aircraft safely to a canal road and landed safely without further incident.
