From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

The PIC was on a local proficiency flight and was the sole occupant of the aircraft. After returning to mkl from a nearby airport, the PIC established radio contact with mkl tower and gave intentions to land at mkl. ATC advised the PIC to report a two mile left base for runway 20. Just prior to reporting the 2 mile callout, helicopter traffic was reported by ATC. ATC advised the PIC that the traffic should not be a factor for him and cleared the PIC to land on runway 20. The PIC stated that he got distracted by the traffic and never completed his prelanding checklist and failed to lower the gear prior to touchdown.

The root cause of the accident was failure to lower the gear cause by pilot error.

Contributing factors were, (1) the pics proficiency in the aircraft. Even though the PIC was proficient per CFR 61.56, the PIC had logged only minimal time in the complex, high-performance aircraft in the proceeding year. (2) the distraction that led to the failure to complete the pre-landing checklist. The incident is recorded in sas activity #CE21202100314.

Corrective action - a remedial training program was offered to the PIC and accepted by the PIC. See sas activity #CE21202100345. -end-

As the FAA filed it

-END-
