From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

The flight instructor (CFI) and student pilot (sp) departed rocky mountain metro (bjc) at approximately 10:20 a.m. on a pre-solo cross-country progress check flight destined for kimball muni (imb). The flight included several simulated in-flight problem/emergency scenarios. After completing several scenarios and after approximately 40 minutes of flight, the CFI instructed the sp to perform a touch and go landing at greeley airport (gxy) and then navigate back to bjc. After the touch and go and at approximately 7500?, the CFI initiated simulated high oil pressure and high oil temp scenarios upon which the sp decided to return to gxy. The CFI then issued a partial power loss and reduced RPM to 2000. The sp pitched for 68 KTS airspeed and was informed by the CFI that the scenario had progressed to a simulated engine fire. The student reduced the throttle to idle and began a dive. When the CFI announced that the simulated fire was out, the sp re-established a 68KT glide and turned for a simulated off-field landing location near Lasalle co. at approximately 1000? AGL, when it was determined that the student would safely reach his selected emergency off-field location, he was instructed to commence a go-around and fly a course back to bjc. When the sp attempted to reapply power as instructed, the engine failed to respond. Sp attempted to apply power a second time with the same results. The sp informed the CFI of the situation and the CFI immediately took control of the airplane. The sp attempted another engine restart with the throttle and mixture fully advanced. The engine propeller turned but the engine failed to start. The sp tuned the VHF to 121.5 and the CFI declared an emergency while performing a 180-degree power-off turn to a different landing spot than what the sp had selected earlier. Upon landing the aircraft struck a raised embankment along a dirt road and flipped over onto its back into an adjacent cornfield. Photos of the crash scene indicate that direction of landing was approximately 70 degrees; the heading of the dirt road is approximately 115 degrees. Both occupants were transported to a hospital with minor injuries. A witness said he watched the aircraft flying low overhead just before crashing and noticed that the propeller was not turning. Crash site is near intersection of weld county road 50.5 & weld county road 41. Aircraft sustained substantial damage to both wings, engine/mount and cowling, fuselage, nose gear and left main gear. As the FAA filed it
