Pilot departed kigq at 1730 central time on 06/22/2022 in VFR conditions going to klse. About 45 minutes out from klse at 3500 ft MSL pilot heard a loud boom and the engine lost power from a cruise setting down to 1800-1700 RPM. While losing altitude pilot added carb heat and then mixture full rich. No change. Pilot switched fuel tanks. No change. Could not maintain altitude. Established best glide speed and dialed in 121.5 calling out for assistance. An air traffic controller and another pilot in the area responded. Could not maintain contact with ATC. Pilot pushed "direct to" on the onboard GPS looking for nearest airport. Klnr tri-county airport near Lone Rock, WI was the closest. Pilot proceeded to klnr and saw the airport in about 30 seconds. Unable to maintain altitude the pilot spiraled down and set up to land on runway 18, the shortest runway. The long runway 9/27 was closed due to construction. Pilot landed on runway 18 but was unable to stop on the hard surface of the runway. Overran past a road and into a farmer's field. Minimal damage to aircraft. No injury to pilot, the sole occupant. Sauk county police responded to the 911 call. Aircraft was moved to a hangar at the klnr airport. Local mechanic's inspection found a large crack in the engine's #2 cylinder. Pilot acted appropriately by getting the airport back on the ground safely. Incident is listed as an in-flight engine mechanical.
