The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
(1) Description:
On July 21, 2022 at 13:10 CDT, privacy data omitted, a Beechcraft BE35, bounced on landing on runway 29 at the central Illinois regional - Bloomington-normal airport (kbmi) and veered left into the runway 29 safety area damaging the aircraft’s nose, main wheel, and airport signage.
(2) Causal and/or contributing factors:
The pilot’s inability to retain control on landing.
(3) "ATC" and rational if ATC actions contributed to the event:
None.
(4) Recommendations for systemic corrective action:
Event not based on a systematic error. The pilot made a mistake in judgement.
(5) Actions taken to address the transgression:
None.
(6) Other comments:
None.
(7) Investigation:
Pilot stated he approached to land runway 29 at bmi. During the landing touchdown, a gust of wind abruptly lifted the aircraft onto the nose wheel and left main, the nose wheel broke, and the aircraft skidded off the left side of the runway into the grass where it struck a runway distance remaining sign. No injuries to the pilot or one passenger.
Upon inspection of the aircraft, the pilot noticed that the propeller had damage from ground contact, the left wing leading edge had a puncture near the root of the wing, and the nose wheel casting was folded back.
The aircraft was removed from the runway safety area to allow the runway to reopen and placed in hangar 4 with the FBO synergy.
The tower reported that the aircraft bounced hard twice and on the third touchdown, slid off the left side of the runway. Winds were reported 240@11 gusting to 18 at the time of landing.
The pilot was cooperative. The pilot stated his flight review was within the last month, has flown this aircraft approximately 12 hours in the last thirty days, and that his medical was renewed in the last sixty days.
The pilot reported he and privacy data omittedwere on their way to oshkosh in their restored 1953 bonanza and were making a fuel stop in Bloomington. The pilot stated he had been restoring the aircraft since 2007 and that it was to be on display at the privacy data omittedtent.
(8) Root cause analysis (rca):
This deviation was due to the pilot’s inability to retain aircraft control in gusty conditions on landing.
(9) Corrective action:
ASI closed deviation with a compliance action of counseling.
(10) Comments:
ASI used counseling to regain compliance. ASI is satisfied the pilot's corrective actions and implementation of new personal policies, fully address the identified cause and have reestablished compliance. ASI recommends no further action.
