What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
Airman of a PA-28 Piper archer on a second solo for private pilot certificate was practicing close pattern landings at Northeast Philadelphia Airport (pne) on runway 24.
On the second landing, while in ground effect and just prior to the wheels touching down on the runway, the airman heard a loud thud on the right side of the aircraft. The airman became distracted by the noise and lost control of the aircraft. The aircraft went off the left side of runway 24 and into the grass. As the aircraft went into the grass it made contact with a runway distance sign. Airport personnel were able to help guide the airman back on to the runway where it was able to taxi back to the ramp under its own power.
The aircraft sustained minor sheet metal damage and some broken ribs to the left wing with no structural damage.
