From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Pilot and privacy data omitted were flying for the purposes of a sightseeing flight. 45 minutes in to the flight, the engine sputtered. Pilot thought because of conditions (45 degree air temp, 1800 AGL overcast) that it might be carb ice. Pilot applied carb heat. 4 minutes later, the engine sputtered again, and pilot was not able to maintain altitude. Pilot found a road to land on and switched fuel selector to the left tank during the descent. After landing on the highway, a visual check of the right tank showed empty. The left tank showed approximately 20 gallons. Pilot started the engine and performed pre flight-engine run up checks before electing to take off and return to grandbury, TX airport.
