From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

About 2 min after take-off, incharge called the flight deck to inform us of a bad burn smell in the cabin. Incharge said that there was no sign of smoke or fire but the smell was all around the cabin.

The captain decided to declare an emergency with ATC and requested vectors for a diversion to iad.

Shortly after the start of descent, captain called back the cabin to assess the situation.

The incharge told captain that the smell was gone and no smoke, fumes or fire were visible.

• Maintenance further inspected the aircraft and found the air cycle machine to be at fault. Air cycle machine placed on MEL and further replaced at a maintenance base. Ref defect 1650726
