From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

The flight was to view a football game in bozeman, MT. The intended flight plan

Was a VFR flight from kbkx to krap for fuel, then from krap to kbzn via an IFR

Flight plan. A preflight check was performed prior to departure. No

Abnormalities were seen on preflight. 0.5 qts of phillips 20W-50 x/c aviation oil

Was added to the engine, this resulted in a full sump of 10 qts. Fuel on board the

Aircraft was 50 gallons. The airplane was loaded with the passengers and was

Within the weight and balance limits of the airplane. The mtow was 3,050 lbs at

Departure. The engine started normally and all engine instruments were checked

Normal. The airplane taxied to runway 30 for runup, which was performed with no

Abnormalities detected. The aircraft taxied onto the runway for departure and full

Throttle was slowly added. All engine instuments and observations were normal.

The aircraft was lifted off at 78 mph and a normal climb began. The climb was set

Up for a cruise climb, with the propellar RPM adjusted back to 2500. The landing

Gear was not retracted yet. At approximately 200-400 ft AGL, a moderate to

Severe engine vibration was felt. The engine monitor was not showing emergency

Warnings, however, the RPM was dropping to 2300 RPM. The mixture was

Confirmed full rich, the throttle confirmed full throttle, and the propellar RPM

Moved back to the full RPM position. It was determined that the power plant was

Producing partial power, so the aircraft was leveled out and a wide left turn was

Started to return immediately to the runway. When perpendicular to the runway

Heading, the stall warning horn was audible. Upon hearing the stall warning horn,

The aircraft was leveled out and pitched down to prevent a stall. A flat, grassy area

Was selected for a forced landing. The airplane impacted the ground and slid to a

Stop. A post-impact fire ensued and the crew and passengers egressed from the

Aircraft. The fire eventually engulfed the entire fuselage of the aircraft. The EMS

Was contacted immediately. The Brookings police, fire department, and

Ambulance services responded to the incident. All on board were taken to the

Brookings regional hospital for medical attention. Two people were both airlifted to sioux falls, SD for further medical attention.

As the FAA filed it
