What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
On 18 October 2025 at 1430 local time aircraft departed ksbp, runway 29 enroute for ksan. During the climb out at approximately 1000 ft AGL, aircraft encountered a bird strike, hitting the right engine. The impact made a loud thud followed by vibration/ humming noise. Both engines continued to operate, but the crew made the decision to return to the field in case the engine #2 failed. Aircraft leveled off at 4,000 ft and crew declared an emergency and informed the tower that the aircraft would be returning to ksbp. Aircraft was handed off to departure and the crew declared an emergency with them and asked for delayed vectors for RNAV 29. Crew didn’t receive eicas messages but noted the right eng lp vibe peaked at 2.0 at the highest point. Captain handed over controls after the initial vectors to the first officer, and programmed the FMS, verified points, and briefed the approach. Captain briefed the flight attendants and informed them that the aircraft will be on ground in 10 minutes. Captain also stated that it will be a precautionary landing. Captain took back the controls and called for descent checklist. The crew performed the approach, landed without any issues and taxied to the gate. While taxing, crash fire rescue trucks contacted the crew, and inspected the plane prior to parking, to ensure there was no fire/ smoke, etc. Once cleared, the aircraft taxied to the gate. The passengers deboarded normally. During the postflight inspection, several fan blades were bent on engine #2. A few ramp personnel witnessed the incident (bird strike) and had mentioned it was a turkey vulture and heard a loud bang from the ground. Crew wrote up the plane for maintenance and informed the mx crew.
