Analysis

Shortly after takeoff, the eng sputtered, lost power & belched black & gray smoke. The plt was unable to get the acft to maintain altidude. Also, he was unable to reach an open field, so he landed on the tops of trees. An investigation revealed that the front bearing of the supercharger had failed. Also, the investigation revealed that on the previous day, an oil scavenge line had become cracked while the aircraft was being taxied. It was repaired prior to flt. No relationship concerning the scavenge line & the supercharger was verified.
