Probable cause

The failure of contract maintenance personnel to comply with written maintenance instructions, resulting in the failure of the nose gear on landing roll.

Sequence of events

NTSB’s coding before 2008: each occurrence and phase of flight, and the causes and factors under it. The codes are defined in NTSB’s coding manual.

Nose gear collapsedLanding - roll
Landing gear,normal retraction/extension assembly - failure,partial

Procedures/directives - not followedOther maintenance personnelCause

Analysis

The crew reported that the nose gear failed on landing roll and retracted. Examination of the nose gear assembly revealed that the chamfered bushes attaching the cable lug to the nose gear pulley were installed 90 degrees from the correct position, exerting uneven loads on the cable where it failed.
