Narrative: American flight 1228, departed dfw 1&1/2 hours late due to thunderstorms at dfw. The aircraft sat on the ground during the heavy rain storms. The flight to stl required the flight to maneuver around isolated cells, however, light to moderate precipitation was encountered during the flight. While near Columbia, MO both engines started to vibrate. The vibration was felt through the aircraft as well as on instrumentation. The captain reduced the throttles. He could only attain 30% power with no vibration. The aircraft was cruising at 33,000 ft. the captain computed that at this power setting he could not reach st. louis, MO. He declared an emergency and commenced a spiral descent into Columbia Regional Airport. An uneventful landing was made. No evacuation was performed. American airlines maintenance personnel from chicago, inspected the engines and found nothing wrong. Water was found inside the engines' N1 fan dome. This was drained out and the aircraft was returned to service. This incident is considered closed with this report.
